Tarot Year Card Calculator
Your year card is your personal tarot card of the year: the Major Arcana card that sets the theme of a single year. Enter your birthday to see your card for this year and the next.
What is a tarot year card?
A tarot year card is the Major Arcana card that sets the theme of one year of your life. You find it by adding your birth month and day to the year and reducing the total to 22 or less. It is also called your personal year card, your tarot card of the year or your year arcana, and it changes every year.
Your birth cards come from your full date of birth and stay with you for life. The year card uses the same arithmetic but swaps your birth year for the year you want to look at.
The method was developed by Angeles Arrien and Mary K. Greer, and Greer sets it out in Tarot for Your Self (1984) and Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011), republished in 2021 as Archetypal Tarot. She describes the year card as the lesson or atmosphere of the year: the kind of experiences likely to stand out, and the qualities the year asks you to develop. It is a prompt for reflection, not a forecast.
How to calculate your year card
Take your birth month and day, add the year you are curious about, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. For a birthday of November 28:
2026: 11 + 28 + 2026 = 2065 → 2 + 0 + 6 + 5 = 13 → Death
2027: 11 + 28 + 2027 = 2066 → 2 + 0 + 6 + 6 = 14 → Temperance
A total of 22 would be The Fool, numbered zero. Two-digit cards also reduce to a single-digit root (13 → 1 + 3 = 4, The Emperor), which many readers treat as a background theme for the year.
Your birth year never enters the sum. Only the month and the day matter, which is why the calculator above doesn't ask for your year of birth.
Does the year start on January 1 or on your birthday?
Both conventions are in use, and Greer herself describes both. Readers who quote Who Are You in the Tarot? say she reads the calendar year, January to December, as the outer events that happen to you, and the year from one birthday to the next as your inner motivations and the way you respond (see a reader's quotation on the Tarot Forum and a review on Tarot Notes). As Benebell Wen summarises the 2021 edition, Archetypal Tarot adds a rule of thumb: if you were born between January and June, the calendar year tends to fit best; if you were born between July and December, birthday to birthday often feels more accurate.
If you count from birthday to birthday, use last year's number until your birthday comes round. Someone born on November 28 who looks in March 2026 is still in their 2025 card (11 + 28 + 2025 = 2064 → 12, The Hanged Man) and moves into Death on November 28, 2026.
The calculator shows calendar-year cards. Pick last year in the menu if you prefer to count from your birthday.
Only 13 year cards are possible in 2026 with Greer's method
Because the sum is month + day + a four-digit year, the total in 2026 can only fall between 2028 (January 1) and 2069 (December 31). Reduce every number in that range and you only ever reach 13 of the 22 Major Arcana:
| Years | Possible year cards |
|---|---|
| 2024–2025 | 5 The Hierophant to 16 The Tower (12 cards) |
| 2026–2028 | 5 The Hierophant to 17 The Star (13 cards) |
| 2029–2035 | 6 The Lovers to 17 The Star (12 cards) |
So with this method nobody gets The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World or The Fool as a year card between 2026 and 2035. The edges are rare too. The Star appears for the first time in 2026, and only for December 31 birthdays. The Hierophant goes the other way: after 2028 it doesn't come up again until 2059.
The missing cards return slowly. With Greer's method The Moon first appears as a year card in 2036, The Sun in 2046 and Judgement in 2056, followed by The Empress in 2057 and The Emperor in 2058. The Magician, The High Priestess, The World and The Fool don't come up in any year up to 2120.
If you have seen someone online with a Sun or World year, they were almost certainly using a different calculation, which brings us to the next question.
Why other sites give you a different year card
There are at least four ways to add up a year card, and they often disagree. Take February 18 in 2026:
| Method | Calculation | Year card |
|---|---|---|
| Month + day + full year (Greer, used here) | 2 + 18 + 2026 = 2046 → 12 | The Hanged Man |
| Month + day + the digits of the year | 2 + 18 + (2 + 0 + 2 + 6) = 30 → 3 | The Empress |
| Every digit added separately | 2 + 1 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 21 | The World |
| Month + day + the digits of the year, then subtract 22 | 2 + 18 + (2 + 0 + 2 + 6) = 30 → 30 − 22 = 8 | Strength |
The first is the method published in Greer's books. The second is how some readers group the sum. The writer Benebell Wen, for example, describes it as her personal approach while noting that it isn't the one in Archetypal Tarot. The third is common on blogs and forums, and the fourth is used by a few online calculators. Readers also differ on whether to stop at 22 (The Fool) or reduce anything over 21.
The method you pick changes how widely the cards are spread. Counting all 366 possible birthdays in 2026:
| Method | Different year cards possible | Same card as Greer's (of 366 birthdays) |
|---|---|---|
| Month + day + full year (Greer) | 13 | All 366 |
| Month + day + the digits of the year | 20 | 190 |
| Every digit added separately | 19 | 91 |
| Digits of the year, then subtract 22 | 22 | 3 |
So if another calculator gives you a different card, it is probably not a mistake: the methods genuinely disagree. The first three always give cards whose numbers differ by a multiple of nine, so they share a single-digit root even when the card changes. In the example, 12, 3 and 21 all reduce to 3. The fourth method doesn't follow that pattern, because subtracting 22 isn't the same as adding digits. This site uses Greer's method because it is the original published one.
Reading your year card with your birth cards
Your birth cards describe the patterns you carry for life; your year card describes the weather you are walking through this year. Reading them together is often more useful than reading either alone.
- Same card as a birth card: when your year card matches your personality or soul card, the year tends to spotlight themes that are already central to you. Someone born on November 28, 1990 has Death and The Emperor as birth cards (11 + 28 + 1990 = 2029 → 13 → 4), and 2026 brings them a Death year too.
- Same root: if your year card reduces to your soul card's number, look at how the year's lesson connects to your deeper path.
- Very different cards: a quiet Hermit year for a natural Chariot, or a Tower year for a steady Temperance, often marks a year that stretches you in an unfamiliar direction.

Frequently asked questions
What is my tarot card of the year for 2026?
Choose 2026 in the calculator above and enter your birth month and day. You'll see your card, the full calculation, and your 2027 card so you can see what comes next.
What is the tarot card of the year 2026 for everyone?
Adding the digits of the year alone gives a general card that applies to everyone: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, Wheel of Fortune. For 2027 it is 11, Justice. Your personal year card adds your birthday to this, so it's specific to you.
How do I calculate my year arcana?
Add your birth month, your birth day and the four-digit year, then add the digits of the total until you reach 22 or less. For November 28 in 2026: 11 + 28 + 2026 = 2065, and 2 + 0 + 6 + 5 = 13, Death. The calculator above shows every step.
When does my year card change?
On January 1 if you follow the calendar year, or on your birthday if you count from birthday to birthday. Readers who quote Greer's book say she reads the calendar year as outer events and the birthday year as your inner response. See both approaches above.
Why can't I get The Sun or The World as my year card?
With month + day + the full year, the totals for 2026 to 2035 only reduce to cards 5 to 17. The Sun, The World and seven other cards can't come up this decade. Calculators that give them are adding the digits a different way.
Why does another site give me a different year card?
Calculators add the numbers in different ways. This site follows Greer: month + day + the full four-digit year. Others add the digits of the year first, add every digit separately, or subtract 22. See the four methods compared above.
Is the year card the same as a birth card?
No. Birth cards use your birth year and never change. The year card uses the year you are looking at and changes every year. You can find your birth cards with the tarot birth card calculator.
Does a difficult year card mean a bad year?
No. Cards like Death, The Tower or The Devil describe the kind of work a year invites, such as letting go, honest change or breaking a habit. They are prompts for reflection, not predictions.
