The Hierophant Tarot Year Card
A year for learning from people who know more than you, choosing which commitments to keep, and finding where you belong.
What a Hierophant year means
The Hierophant is the teacher of the Major Arcana: the keeper of tradition who passes on what a community has learned. As a year card it points to twelve months shaped by learning, mentors, institutions and the groups you belong to. You might enrol in a course, join an organisation, take on an apprentice or finally read the books everyone in your field has read. Marriage, initiation and other formal commitments are classic Hierophant territory too.
The card also asks a quieter question: which rules and beliefs are actually yours? A Hierophant year often brings you into contact with tradition precisely so that you can decide what to keep, what to adapt and what to leave behind.
The Hierophant is about to become very rare. With Greer's method only three birthdays get it in 2026 (January 3, February 2 and March 1) and two in 2027 (January 2 and February 1). After 2028 the totals are too high to reduce to 5, and nobody gets a Hierophant year again until 2059.
Work, love and inner life
Work and money: Training, qualifications, apprenticeships and joining established organisations. A good year to find a mentor, or to become one.
Love and relationships: Commitment, shared values and the expectations of family and community. Conversations about what a relationship should look like tend to come up.
Inner life: Spiritual practice, study and ritual. Many people pick up a discipline they keep for years.

- Choose one subject and study it properly, with a teacher or a structured course.
- Write down three beliefs you inherited and decide whether each still earns its place.
- Offer to teach something you already know well.

Who has The Hierophant as their year card in 2026 and 2027?
With Greer's method your year card depends only on what your birth month and day add up to. In 2026, The Hierophant is the year card for anyone whose month + day comes to 4: 3 birthdays: January 3, February 2 and March 1. In 2027 the total is 3, which gives 2 birthdays: January 2 and February 1.

Before and after a Hierophant year
Everyone with The Hierophant in 2026 had Death as their 2025 year card, and all of them move on to The Lovers in 2027. Most years the card moves forward one step, but when your total crosses into a new decade (2049 to 2050, for example) the digits reset and the card drops back. That is why some birthdays jump between The Hierophant and Death.
These dates follow the calendar year, as in Greer's method. If you count your year from birthday to birthday instead, your Hierophant year runs from your birthday in that year to your next one. When does a year card start?
