Death Tarot Year Card
A year for clearing out what is finished and making room for what comes next.
What a Death year means
Despite its name, Death in tarot rarely means physical death. It is the card of endings and transformation: in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck a skeleton in armour rides through the land while the sun rises in the distance. As a year card it describes a year when something comes to its natural end, whether a job, a relationship, a home or a way of seeing yourself, so that something new can begin.
Death years can feel intense, but they often look like a relief in hindsight. The card asks you to let go cleanly rather than hold on to what has already gone, so that the energy tied up in the old situation is free for whatever comes next.
Thirteen reduces to 4, The Emperor, the background theme: once the ground is cleared, you get to build a new structure on firmer foundations.
Work, love and inner life
Work and money: Endings and career changes: closing a chapter of a business, leaving a role, or reinventing how you work.
Love and relationships: Relationships transform. They either change shape and deepen, or they end. Old patterns lose their grip.
Inner life: Shedding habits, possessions and self-images that no longer fit. Decluttering in every sense.
Gifts of a Death year
- A clean break from something that drained you.
- Space for a genuinely new chapter.
- Lightness after letting go.
- Rediscovering who you are without an old role.
What to watch for
- Clinging to something that has clearly ended.
- Making drastic changes just to feel in control.
- Getting through a loss without letting yourself grieve it.
- Fearing the card so much that you resist natural change.
Working with your Death year
- Do a real clear-out of possessions, commitments and subscriptions.
- Mark endings with a small ritual so that you can move on.
- Write about who you are becoming, not just what you are leaving.
Questions to reflect on
- What in my life has already ended, even if I haven't admitted it?
- What am I keeping out of habit or fear?
- What would I build if I had a clear field?
Who has Death as their year card in 2026 and 2027?
With Greer's method your year card depends only on what your birth month and day add up to. In 2026, Death is the year card for anyone whose month + day comes to 3, 12, 21, 30 or 39: 42 birthdays (about 11% of the year). In 2027 the totals are 2, 11, 20, 29 or 38, which gives 41 birthdays (about 11% of the year).
January 2, 2026: 1 + 2 + 2026 = 2029 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 9 = 13 → Death

Before and after a Death year
Everyone with Death in 2026 had The Hanged Man as their 2025 year card, and in 2027, 40 move on to Temperance and 2 move on to The Hierophant. Most years the card moves forward one step, but when your total crosses into a new decade (2049 to 2050, for example) the digits reset and the card drops back. That is why some birthdays jump between Death and The Hierophant.
These dates follow the calendar year, as in Greer's method. If you count your year from birthday to birthday instead, your Death year runs from your birthday in that year to your next one. When does a year card start?
